636 Frame Sliders

I bought a set of frame sliders not too long ago. I have yet to put them on yet because I cant seem to be able to get this weird allen bolt off where the motor is mounted to the frame. There is this thing on the bolt that looks like it might need a specialty tool to be able to get it off. Does anyone know how to remove these bolts or if i need a special tool?

No special tool needed for what you are doing. The allen head bolt is inside that bolt. Kinda weird looking, I know, but just pull the allen and that's it. I would also suggest, just in case the instructions don't, putting some thread locker on the bolts when you put your sliders on. I had an issue with one of mine working itself loose even though I torqued everything properly. Obviously, do one side at a time and make sure you catch the nuts on the backside when you take them loose.

The trick I use is to use Allen headed sockets and a long bar. Hold the socket absolutely square and seated and fractionally tighten the bolt. You can hear a faint "tink" as it cracks. Then carefully undo. The long bar allows you gently apply pressure and to feel if you're going to strip the hex socket.

Holy shit that's funny. You guys just got shown up by a girl.

Anyway, this seems to be an issue with a lot of bikes lately. I have heard of quite a few guys stripping out the allen head and having to drill it out, which I hope none of you have to do. 'Cause that sucks balls and opens the opportunity for more problems. My next suggestion would be to apply heat if you can. Get your bike to operating temp and give it a try, if still nothing, take the torch to it. If no torch, call a friend or a dealer. If the head is screwed then you could go to the hardware store and pick up what is called an "Easy-Out" kit and give that a shot. If that doesn't work, there is also the option of breaking out the dremel and cutting a new head on the bolt but that can be kinda risky and if it doesn't work then the next step would be to get out the drill which, as stated above, is a bitch. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Oh, and I couldn't tell you about how much a dealer would charge. Maybe someone else has some info on that.

The castle looking nut is a locknut and with no cut Oggy Knobs here in OZ doesn't need to be touched only the hex ('07) or flanged ('08) which is replaced when fitting the knobs.

I finally got my frame sliders on!!! After i stripped that bolt i was going to buy a bolt puller. I thought that was the only way i was going to be able to get it off. I was at my friends house and I asked his step-dad if he had one i could borough. He didnt, as me and my friend were just bullshitting around his dad was messing with my bike. He used his 6mm allen key and holy crap it worked! The only explanation i can come up with is after i looked at his allen keys they were rounded at the tip and mine are square. I dont know if that made the difference but one things for sure i will be getting new allen keys.

Its kind of funny that I just now read your post shifty. All of that is good info that I could of used, but i ended up finding it all out myself. I did all that stuff heat, torch, ez-out, and it came down to a different set of keys. I thought about taking my bike to the dealer, but they charge $60 an hour. I recommend to everyone in this forum to do the work on their own bike if you can. You will more than likely learn something and you will have something you can be proud of.
