I read that after removing the flys, you MUST install a power commander. Is that true?
I also read there may be overheating problems after the flys are removed. Also true?
A friend of mine will remove his flys, and I will hopfully drive it before and after to see the difference to determine if I want to do mine. I DONT want a bike that will get 10 miles per gallon or overheat after removing them, nor do I want to be forced to add a $300 power commander to my bike. So far, I am happy with the power since I only weigh 170 lbs.

It not neccessary to install PCIII after flys removal. The bike however will run a bit lean in the lower revs. Pickup/torque will also increse significantly.
No overheating occur after flys removal. For the past year been using the bike without flies and without fail or problems. Fuel consumption remains the same unless you tend to get excited playing "launching" all the time.

Removed mine the other day with just 11 miles on the clock No power commander yet, but its on order.
Cant say good or bad on the gas mileage.. Havnt gone through a tank yet. It was 70 here today and I rode 40 miles in traffic and no problems with overheating.

to scavenger I think he ran the pcIII then removed it so he would know. I am running a pcIII with no flies, a bmc race filter, the micron system, and a custom map and still run consistant 35mpg and even better on the highway so you aren't going to hinder the range of the bike. just by pullin the flies you might change your fuel consumption an unnoticable amount at low rpms when your really using it and the higher the rpm you go the more the flies would have opened so you are affecting your mileage less as you increase the rpms compared to the stock setup.

What about on an '08
I know that they're were some slight mods on the '08 engine and I think the secondaries were opening more quickly. Does this mod make sense on the '08? I doubt I'll ever end up at a drag strip but I love putting the spurs to her in the canyons. Thanks for the input.

It will still help the low end and throttle response. they still stay closed at the lower rpms so removing them will give you a more instant response at those lower rpms.

Has anyone here taken them out, and done NO other modification (ie, no pcIII)? Would you recommend doing this mod, even if that's all you do?
Does it become too powerful / unrideable without the pciii? Does it stall as mentioned above?
I guess what I am asking is, if I just remove them and that's it - is this something I want to do?

I still have the stock exhaust, no pc, and just the flies out. I would recommend doing the mod. It seems to ride just as smooth as stock with the addition of more torque down low. I didnt like the bike feeling like it was choked at lower rpm's. Try it, It can be reversed.. If you dont like it put the flies back in.
I will be getting a full exhaust and a pc3 tune just because for me the more power the better

you will still be able to ride the bike and you will not have stalling problems there is a slight possibllity that your bike might be on the lean side at mid level rpms but there are many, many people running this mod and have no problems. You see a major increase in low end torque and response but it will not leave you sitting at the light watching your bike do a wheelie without you.

Today I removed the flys, as mentioned above, and I would like to extend this thread with my observations.
1) Get the right tools for the job. A 7 inch brand new screwdriver is required to remove the screws. The outer screws are slightly offset and can't be directly accessed with a screwdriver since the frame is in the way. Make sure your screwdriver can push directly down on the screws - a 7 inch screwdriver does the job.
2) As mentioned above, make sure you heat the screws first to losen the lock-tight stuff. Put your trusty propane torch on the tip of the screwdriver to heat it up, then place the screwdriver on the screw for 15 seconds, then repeat again, for a total of 30 seconds of heat applied. COUNT SLOW. I almost stripped the first two screws because I was impatient. The last screws were coming out perfectly because I had learned my lesson on the first two.
3) You dont need to take off the tank. I suspended mine from the garage door opener as shown in the photo. Made it much easier. Put a cloth under the tank to prevent scratches. Doing this saves having to drain the tank etc.
4) A magnet-on-at-stick tool is essential for retreiving the screws. I dont know what it is called. Get one.
Lastly, the power upgrade is really nice. I noticed it first second I was on the bike. It isn't the "rip your arms out of their sockets" type of power, and it is manageable power, just more of it. I got a power commander on the way to smooth out the fuel.
I like it - glad I did it.

TRE/gi pro
Hi, new to the forum, I have a '06 ZX14 in passion red (picures to follow) I haven't taken the flies out, although reading these posts makes me inclined to do it, but I installed a timing retard eliminator with a gear indicator. I guess the idea is the TRE sends a 6th gear map to the engine computer so there is no timing retard. I didn't notice a huge difference, but the bright red gear indicator is very nice, much easier to read than the oem indicator. So if I am reading this correctly, Kawasaki installed a sub 6000 rpm timing retard, as well as the secondary flies? what's next, pull one of the spark plug wires?

^^Yeah till they release the next years model then they put it back on and claim more horsepower after there extensive research.
Hey camper I didn't know it at the time I did mine but the screw driver that you need to do the job right is actually a Japanese size screw driver that fits those screws it is very similar to the phillips but obviously fits them perfectly, Yeah I was also a bit hasty the first screw or two with the heat but learned to heat the crap out of it and leave the screwdriver tip on the screw for a full 30 seconds to allow it to heat the locktite completly.
Also there is a fuel shutoff valve in the fuel outlet line on the bottom of the tank (incase you didn't see it) so you can pull the tank without draining it. But the magnet tool is a good idea my screw driver was magnitized so I didn't have any problems dropping them.
Like the Spitfire photos on the wall!!!!! and the Tely booth nice touch is it a real booth?

Dont tell anyone about the booth but...
About 10 years ago, I lived in England for a year, and outside my apartment was this phone booth. It blocked the window and I could see it all the time. One night, about 2 weeks before I left to go back to Canada, I decided I wanted it.
So I unscrewed all the bolts, took it all down in one night and brought it inside my apartment. Then over the next few evenings, I took out all the glass panes, took out the spacers, took the doors apart, the roof, lights, and then mailed it home in about 4 boxes. The biggest was flat with the 4 "walls" inside it. I would have been cheaper just do buy one from the phone company.
Back home, I repainted it and now I have a phone booth in my garage. I wonder what the phone guys must have thought when they found the booth missing.

That's great I love it I can see them now calling it in "I thought we had a booth at this corner?"

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I feel that it is in order to compliment you on such a thorough how-to and not to mention AWESOME pics of the Micro system. Any sound clips of it yet?

Thanks for taking the time to post the pics. Can you give us any details on the grips you are using?

Has anyone tried machining the flys?
Has anyone thought about, or tried machining the fllys to make them let's say 25% (or whatever) smaller? I would think this should be enough to alleviate the low end restriction/cork without risking a lean condition..
