Radar Detector?? Any luck
I am seriously considering a radar detector for my early morning commutes to work. Too many hiding spots on the country back roads. Does anyone use a detector and if so what brand, model etc..Are there any waterproof ones that are any good? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I have an Escort 8500 mounted on a techmount. Got it off fleabay for $150 reconditioned with a full warranty. Audio cord is plugged into a Belkin Rockstar along with my Ipod. It has saved me several tickets, but if the man has laser, your ass is grass. Other types of radar are constant-on, thusly you get a warning signal before you get in range. With lidar (laser radar), it's point and shoot, so by the time you get a blip, you've been had.

I ran a Passport for years on my 2 V-65 Magnas and for a while on my FJ1200 but it seems that most often I would catch them with the naked eye first as long as I was paying attention but every once and a while it would go off and I would slow down in time but seems the instant on and the laser is predominent anymore and your detector is useless against that. It didnt seem worth the hassle of taking it off and putting it on when I went places anymore I found myself looking down and saying Ohh how long has that been going off so I must not have been paying attention to it enough.

Mine's an Escort Solo S2 cordless on a TechMount. A beautiful unit, no cords, and has an earphone jack so it can be heard under a helmet. Plenty to be found on Craigslist or eBay, as people are starting to get rid of their expensive toys, as they get short on extra cash.

escort 9500
I am using an escort 9500 with gps on a tech mount. It does not work for laser but you can punch in gps coordinates for known radar trap locations and it will remind you later. It also has all the camera locations.

These are great ideas. Thanks. I am not too worried about laser, just lookin for the friendly reminder at night. I do not believe they laser at night, but I may be wrong.

I have owned and used just about every radar detector made.......that said, I own 4 different high end units right now and my go to detector without fail will always be my Sensoro Traveller. It might not pick up the signal the farthest away but it is my top choice overall. Sensoro discontinued my model but I just scored a mint used one on eBay for $40.00 so I have a backup if ever needed. I just sold my Escort 8500 yesterday....it was no better then my Sensoro.

The coating is bullshit, but laser jammers work. The only drawback is they approach $500 to purchase. The "Euro Cannonball" article in Cycle World over a year ago talked about a "back-up warning" device that effectively jams lasers. Didn't say exactly what it was, but probably some sort of microwave device similar to the jammers they sell as purpose-built.

Hammerhead: Not to be nit-picky, but "laser-radar" is a misnomer. It doesn't use any radiowaves, only laser light. The actual acronym, LIDAR is Light Detection And Ranging; LADAR is Laser Detection And Ranging.
I had an Escort for a while and as has been said, LADAR is what most departments are using for their targeted enforcement and all the unit does then is add insult to injury (ie. BEEEP, BEEEP, YOU JUST GOT A TICKET, BEEEP, BEEEP!). Moving RADAR is still used in my area, but if you can't see that you're flying up on a cop driving in front of you, then you're asking for trouble.
That said, I'd probably get another if I found a good deal because it certainly can't hurt (actually, in VA, it can, but thats another story). I've got a headphone jack on my helmet, so it'd just be a matter of plugging it into a splitter with my ipod.
