Mirrors too wide!
Just upgraded fronm the old ZZR1100 and im finding lane splitting much more restricted with the mirrors about 120mm wider on the zx14 compared to the ZZR.
This is making it take longer to get to work on the new ZX14 which is just not right!
Has anyone come up with a solution for this problem?
I see the pig spotter mirrors for sale on ebay, but i imagine they are virtually useless.. I just need the stalks effectively shortened about 50mm on each side. yes rearview wont be as good, but im prepared to loose some rear vision.
I m thinking i need to take them to a car body shop and get them cut/shortened/plastic welded and refinished, but this is not going to be cheap..

First of all, lane splitting is illegal and dangerous (even though, in NY, I do it all of the time).
Second of all, the mirrors on the ZX-14 are the first mirrors I have ever had on a sport bike that I can actually see what's on the side of me, and behind me, and they don't vibrate!
They are a top notch accessory, in my opinion..

Lane splitting is legal here too, in Califonia. I feel his pain. Traffic is so bad out here, that sometimes, when I know I'm just going to be splitting lanes for a while, I'll move the stalks all the way in (towards me). They become useless, but during lane splitting, you don't need them. When it looks like traffic is thinning out, I move them back to normal.
BTW, I don't lane split at 80mph. I do it when traffic is stopped or < 30 mph. It's not just safer, the CHP considers "legal lane splitting" to be no more than 5 mph greater than the speed of traffic and at no more than 35 mph.

i wish lane splitting was legal everywhere but there are always those who abuse it and fly going 80mph down the center line

Just fold them in, its not what's behind you that is important, it's the gap in front????, Barend mirrors would suck, Pig spotters are as useless as a turd in a pool, I tried a mirror from a bicycle shop, small helmet mounted one, it's surprisingly clear, not even 1 inch round.

WTF does Obama have to do with lane splitting? The Feds have nothing to do with it, it's a matter of State law. Some allow it and some don't. BTW it's spelled Australia.

If you're worried about your mirrors, you shouldn't split that lane. The body of the bike isn't too far off from that. If anything, do like I did on my other bikes and look at mirrors as a warning that you're too close. With my zx14, I'm more experienced splitting lanes but dont do it when its closer because I WANT more distance...not just because of the width of the bike, but because its not as flickable as a r1/600cc.

Is that the latest? I have a hard time keeping up with the pace of American Politics. It's so boring in Canada....
Good speech on Wed night.

Latest? No, they were saying that back when he first started talking about running.
It's not true though. Everyone knows Obama isn't the Antichrist... his wife is.

I had a guy open his door on my while he was sitting still and I was lane splitting at about 8 mph in dead stop traffic. Unless you want to get into a fist -2 cuffs, what the hell can you do, besides take a valium and a beer when you get home.

you could have whacked his mirror and hoped to see him chase you on foot while you kept on going.

I once was stuck between 2 truckers who were busting my balls on RTE.80 in the Express lanes on the approach to the GW bridge. One would move up and almost let me squeeze through, and then the other one would have some fun and give me an inch to give the appearance that he was going to let me squeeze through.
This fun game went on for 10 minutes until I finally got through and flicked them both off for their generosity and philanthropic warmth that I call NJ Hospitality.
I forgot about it 10 minutes later where there was a 8 mile backup at the toll booths, where I saw 2 burly 6'5"guys headed towards me wearing a pretty shade of plaid shirts, with faces that made Robert Dinero's "Taxi Driver" you talkin' to me?" seemed pale in comparison.
Needless to say, I broke every law that NJ had in the record books, to create an "Osmosis-like" getaway defying Newton's belief that 2 pieces of matter can't be in the same place at the same time, and obviously I lived to tell the tale.
I was riding a BMW R60/6 3 speed rocket ship at the time, and I've had gray hair ever since.
I believe that I was singing "give me three steps towards the door" at the time, but that was then and this is now and history seems to repeat itself at least with idiots like me.
That was then, and this is now, and my fun extravaganzas never seem to end.
It's not the adventure, it's the thrill of the chase, I suppose. That's why I need a 2.3 second bike. It's a matter of survival. Namely mine.
Of course this story is purely for entertainment purposes.

I have a golden rule in regards to your flippin the bird situation, I never do it unless I'm prepared to stop and get ugly with the person or persons, like a gun don't point it unless your really prepared to use it, otherwise what's the point in pointing it in the first place??.
