Cool meet new member of my family.

the one in the front is Angie.. who i picked up two weeks ago and cant stop riding her.. ..then I got Carla.. a little on the heavy side (800lbs and 1800cc to be exact).. and then my old reliable friend Rodger in the back.. .. am i crazy to name them all..

here she is all alone.. i know they are crappy cell phone pics but at least i got my priorities straight.. i would rather be riding Angie than taking her pictures..

i believe most people that buy new bikes (i buy used and save a few grand) change the oil at 100, 600, and then every 3000 miles. after the first 100 the oil has flakes of metal in it from the bike wearing in. definitely diy. buy kawi filter and oil and diy. save tha $$$! you may need to buy 5 quarts b/c it holds 4.1 with a new filter. get a friend to show you how if you think you might have trouble. after seeing it done once you'll never have to worry about how to do it again. it would be better to get him to walk you through the process yourself. remember to hand tighten the filter. don't screw too tight or you'll have a hell of a time getting it back off.

I see great minds think alike. I also own a 2003 Honda VTX 1800C. She's dressed out all in black just like my ZX14. You have a great combination there, brother. The best of both worlds in my humble opinion.

I will get to it today and do it my self.. is there anything else the dealer does at 600 mile service or is it simply the oil change?? if there is nothign else i would rather do that myself too otherwise it will be close to 200 here in jersey to get it done..

buy a tube of temperary locktite and put a dab on as many bolts as you can. i'm having to find hex bolts for the 636 'cause the prev owner didn't know squat about bikes that's all the dealer would (supposed) to do other than oil and filter.

There is no need to change your oil at 100 miles; that's personal preference...the first factory recommended oil change is 600 miles and it is a must for the reason specified by reeves in his previous post; metal flakes.... Don't feel bad u didn't do it at 100, b/c u didn't have to. Myself personally, I did the first right around 700 miles and the next one will be a semi synthetic at 2K and full syn at 3K. Gonna go Synthetic on the antifreeze too b/c this puppy runs hot! Enjoy the bike!

u can also tighten the throttle if it has more than 2-4 mm play, but that is an easy chore. That's your basic dealer 600 mile service, oil n throttle.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys for saving me major dough on the service.. i did the oil change myself and went synthetic..

on a side note the oil that came out just after 300 miles had clear signs of metal flakes and a lot of them.. i couldnt believe it as i always thought it was nothing serious but now i know otherwise.. thanks..

I had the same large quantity of metal in my first change (100 miles).

You may want to research using synthetic before finishing the break in period.

I thought the sooner you switch the better, but all the mechanics I've talked to said not to do it until the break in period was over. Synthetics are so good at stopping wear, they actually stop the break in process.

I am by no means an expert, just passing on what I've heard.
