At least get a pciii on there before you do some damage. I would be scared to death to ride it with the flies removed and not remapping it.

Yeah ... it runs fine w/o a PC3. I saw the a/f maps that were posted, as long as I don't hang out in the 1st-5th gear range at 3-4k rpm then it's probably all good.

Okay, I have also joined the club. The flys came out today and WOW! what a difference. My engine is noticablly smoother and the seat of pants experience is awsome. This bike pulls alot harder now and the reponse is very crisp. I'm running a PCIII with map provided by Dynojet.
I can now offer some advice when removing your flys. Definetly use a propane torch to heat up the screwdriver. I started by using a soldering iron and almost stripped the screws. Using a torch to heat the screwdriver made it alot easier. Just hold the screwdriver on the screw for about 20 seconds before turning. Make sure you are using a good #2 screwdriver. Rounded ones can easily give you grief.
Good bye for now. I'm going riding.

I know that yanking the flies on '06-'07's works. I have an 08 and yanking them doesn't do much. In fact I lost 2-3 hp in a few spots as well on up top. This was done with a M-10 Muzzy and trying 3 different maps - none could match the numbers I got with the flies in. The stock 08 has about 8+/- hp over a stock 06-07 up to 6,000 rpm. then falls below the 06-07's on the top. I have since put the flies back in and just put a Yoshimura TRC system on a couple days ago. I am going to try to dyno it tomorrow or Wednesday.

AZ ZX - I answered you today.
Not sure if I am going to get the thing on the dyno today. Raining every day right now in the afternoon, so I just ride in the morning and swap with my truck in the afternoon.

so guys, I was thinking about removing my 2ndary flies, but after seein' Jus Cruisin's post, I think I'm goin to pass on that.
What are you guys sayin'? Should I keep the flies or remove'em?

I pulled the flies on my 08 and at first my bike showed improvement. Kinda like after you wash your bike it always seems to run better. I then reinstalled them because it was apparent my bike was not running as crisp as it used to. (A custom map would have corrected this).
Now that I have tried both ways I can share some experience. If you have an 08, you are not going to see much improvement as compared to the 06-07 models. Kawasaki has tweaked the fi and made the flies open faster on the 08so the performance is already enhanced.
What mods have you done so far?
Are you drag racing or just racing an occasional bike on the streets?

I guess I'm not sure how your bike at first showed improvement, and then didn't. It either pulled harder or it didn't. If it pulled harder at first and then didn't, then you have a problem with the bike. With all due respect, this is not like "washing" your bike. Removing an obstruction in the intake is one of the fundemental principles of an internal combustion engine. If I remember correctly, all engines burn fuel at what is called a stoiciometric ratio, which is typically around 15:1. 15 parts air to 1 part fuel. Any time you alter one or the other, the engine computer will recalibrate, as best it can to maintain that. When we add a power commander, turbo, racing air filter, more cubic inches, etc., we are raising one side or the other to force adding of the other side, which in turn makes more power.
Now, obviously you were there, I wasn't. However based on what I've explained above, even if Kawasaki now has those flies open much sooner, (which would then negate the whole purpose of having them in the first place) you should still see a little improvement.
So I guess I don't really have a question or an answer, just having seen firsthand the substantial improvement on my own bike, I was actually a little dissappointed for you.

I guess I was asking you to read between the lines. As noted by Jus Crusin the 08's have aproximately an 8 hp advantage over the 06-07 up to 6k. People who remove the the flies on the 06-07 models are going make up a good part of the 8 hp difference so they are going to notice more improvements.
The point I'm trying to make was that I'm not willing to give up more top end for very little improvement on the low end. I have spent more of my efforts in the mapping and now my bike is fine tuned for optimum output throughout the powerband. I'm quite happy with the results. There is no need to feel disappointed.
If I ever decide to race at the track I may consider removing the flies reworking the map and maybe reduce the sprockets. More importantly I would also work on my launches and reaction times. In the meantime I'm just having fun on the streets.

I have modded her just for the looks, put some carbons, and it seems I'm the only '08 owner in my country (Romania) with 4-1-2 carbon Akrapovic exhausts. Took out the silencers and... OMG... the sound is incredible... but I have to watch out the police, cos at nightfall they tend to stop any loud motorcycle and test it with a decibel meter... and if you're out of the legal level... you can loose your license...

good reading
a lot of good information here...thanks guys.
so it seems for an 06 and 07 no flies is a great mod as long as you don't keep it between 3-4000rpm's.
that article from brocks performance was very good.
