Timmy sorry to hijack your thread but I'm in the same position.

Can anybody advise which is regarded as the best model (A1, A2, B1H etc) to go for and the differences?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, for me and Timmy

Hey guys,
I have been a XZ12R owner since last November. I purchased a 2005 model.
2005 was the last year they were made, although I heard they made an 06 that sold only in Europe. I don't know anything about the different models, but I think they are probably pretty much the same. Just different parts to meet requirments for different areas they were sold. I can tell y'all about what I have run into since owning my bike and what changes I have made. I purchased my bike with a full Muzzy pipe and power commander. The first thing I noticed was the engine surged bad at idle. After talking to some people I found out this was due to the change from the stock pipe. I was able to cure this by purchasing a 4 degee ignition advancer from Factory Pro for $60. I installed it myself. It was easy to do and only required an inpact tool for the retaining nut. The bike idles fine now and it did not effect performance. Power commander also has an electronic anvancer for $250 and allows you to map the ignition curve. The bike comes with a size 200 tire, but I have replaced it with a 190 and you can't tell the difference other then it turns better now and 190's are a more common tire. After market part are fairly easy to find. I have purchased a carbon fiber front fender, rear hugger, gas cap cover, tank pad, and heal guards. All real CF.
I love the bike. It is really fast. I keep up with or beat GSXR's, ZX14's, Bussa's, etc.
It is lighter and smaller then the ZX 14's which is what I like. I have had no mechanical problems with my bike and I have put several thousand mikes on it already.
It is a little cold blooded, but it has a manual choke that works good. Living in Florida the bike does get hot in traffic, but has never overheated. I just put a new Targa undertail on this week and it looks great. Really cleans up the large bulky stock tail.
Targa was more expensive then the other makes, (Hot Bodies, etc.) but it looks better.
If you deside to buy the 12 I can guarenty you won't be disapointed.

Hello I would agree with Sprinttech great bike, I have a 04 with a bolt on Hindle no issues with idle. Some differance in years are 2000 non-restricted 300+++ 01-05 slows down at 280 and levels off at 300. I think the front breaks change was in 03? great all around town or running the corners. Plastic is the same for all years except the upper fairing changed in 01 or 02? try one out you will love it, just hold on when you crack it very fast in a very quick way. Only recall I know about is chance of oil wicking up the wires from the stator, no issues with mine as of yet.
Good Luck

Also check the recalls for the valve stems and ECU. I just had those changed on Kawasaki's dime for the tune of $715.
