Intermittent electrical issues

Hi all,

First post here. hope to stay an active member for a long time. Last season I bought a mint (stock, except for yosh slipon) 2004 zx12r with 5k miles. I have had more than 20 bikes in the last 10 years, so I am an experienced rider, however never had any issues like this on another bike.

Also let me say I am aware of the electrical gremlins on the 12r, and have searched all the forums extensively, so I know that my issue is quite a common one and bound to sound (all too) familiar to some other 12r owners, but I am looking for advice on troubleshooting.

I apologize if the post is long, but I figured I will give as much information as possible.....

Here are the issues:

1) intermittent very rough idle: feels like it wants to chug and die, and once in a while it actually does die...I have set idle to 1400 rpm. when this happens the power in first gear also feels low. It does not feel like it is misfiring or missing a cylinder - however just a bit low...

2) flickering dash lights (Nutral/highbeam fade and get stronger constantly, under any rpm even high rpm)

3) Even though I have the bike on battery tender all the time, I notice that the clock and odo. reset themselves to 12:00 and 0 out of no where. This could happen when the bike is in the garage, or when I am out riding.

4) This past weekend I was out for a ride, I shut the bike off and when I started to get back home, I had very very rough idle as explained above - then it just DIED. All electrical power went dead. RPM and speedo gauge needles stuck in the middle of the dial. At first, I thought it is a dead battery/charging issue. I let the bike cool off, then attempted to bump start down a slight hill. I did that twice. The bike did not start, but all of a sudden, all electrical power came back, and she started right up and I was able to ride home.

I would really appreciate some thoughts/experiences as to where to begin looking.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

I had the clock reset thing going on. turned out to be a weak battery. Kept on a trickle charger, it always fired the bike up but if left alone long enough, not so much. Since the battery was replaced, no more resets.

It may be a pig, but it's a pig with a rocket in it's ass!
