Trouble shifting into first from neutral.

Occasionally from neutral it refuses to go into first unless I stomp on it for awhile, any ideas? Just bought this 95 and only has 11000 km's but it had been sitting for about 10 years. So after cleaning out carbs and coating the tank it is now running ok. Also stalled on me when coming to a hard stop. What could cause that as the idle speed seems fine.

not unusual, even my 08 zx6r, which has one of the best bike trannies ever, suffers from this occasionally. typically it's when you're sitting at a light and you've been there a while (long light, lotsa traffic, two minutes go by), when it's finally your turn you clutch and push down and it just doesn't want to go; don't know why this happens, but don't try to force it; just let the clutch out again, rev a little, re-clutch and it will probably go in, if not then let the clutch out part way and rock the bike while trying gently to shift into first and it should go.

I was thinking the clutch adjustment also. I will check it out and lube the cable at the same time. Thanks.
Any ideas on the stalling from a quick stop?

Sometimes when a bike sits, the clutch plates soak up a lot of oil and tend to stick together instead of separating properly when the lever is pulled. Try taking the clutch pack apart and cleaning the friction plates with some solvent.

Not shure if this is a sarcastic comment or not but clutch plates will stick together over time if not used. this could be the problem.
