I need to get off my ass and put my bike back on the road. hasn't been cranked in 6 years or so, and the gas cap lock is not cooperating (tank is empty--I ran it out of gas). Anything I need to do prior to hooking up a new battery and hitting start? I'm concerned about dry bearings.

Can the gas cap be removed without actually opening it?

Tommorrow, I will be working on some of my projects and this is on the list if I can manage the heat. Well, I wasn't planning on actually turning it over because I don't have a battery for it.

An IC with a clock is interchangeable with one that doesn't have a clock, right? I want a clock and I don't need two TO's.

From what I can tell, the gas cap has to be opened to remove it. I would shoot a little PB Blaster in there and then insert the key and jiggle it. A little up/down & side to side movement will probably loosen it up and let you open it. If you don't have a key, then a locksmith can remove the tumbler.

About the dry bearings, yes they are, but as soon as it turns over a couple of times they won't be dry. Was the bike put up with fresh oil? If so, then good. Otherwise, combustion byproducts in the oil could have etched some of the bearing surfaces and shortened their life. Probably not enough to prevent you from riding it, you just won't get the longevity.

The bike was put up with fresh mobil one and new plugs. I have a key, but I only have one, and I really don't want to bend or break it in that lock.

You may try pressing down the cap and turn the key . Put in some lub , wd40 or lock lub . Good luck . Dan
