i thought the only reason they had so few orange ones was because they are too fast, the cops outlawed them lol

my busa would wheelie around 15mph, in 1st gear, by snapping the throttle, all the way to 80 mph. especially after i had a +2 rear sprocket installed

Before I bought my ZX10R, I considered buying a wrecked zx10 and rebuilding it (half for fun, half cuz its cheaper, before it I had an 05 ZX6RR that i rebuilt...) and as i was browsing wrecked zx10s, some in shops, some on ebay, some online... there was one piece of damage that ALL of them had: rash on the muffler end caps, in the upwards direction. Story is always the same: they 12'oclock em. I did a wheelie on accident once and it damn near gave me a heart attack. Are wheelies not for me? maybe. But i've been riding a year and a half and i'll be first to admit im not ready for that yet...

^^ good to see that someone can admitt if it is more than what they can handle at the present time.
My ten would flip me in a heartbeat in first gear. I can manage about half a KM on the back wheel in first. The balance point is to narrow and the touchness of first gear means I am working to hard and concentrating beyond belief to maintain the wheelie for a respectable distance.
I much prefer second leading in to third!

The 10 is quite a few leaps ahead of my nine in hp and torque and its very easy to get even my 9r up in 1st gear. sometimes to easy.......i wouldnt imagine that 1st gearing a 10 is a good idea. as for 2nd gear i go about 55 or 60 and just power it up. 2nd has more throttle control but then again your goin alot faster so if (and when) you mess up, that will be your @$$. and it goes without saying that when you are 2nd gearing it up it is alot easier to stand. i dont blurp the throttle and wait for the whole suspesion release deal. i just force it down with my arms and pop it up. its much more stable that way and there are no suprises.

my buddy has a stunted gixxer 6, 60-something tooth rear sprocket, crash cage, rear brake on the left bar, etc. He might teach me a thing or two on that, it pulls like a 1000 with that sprocket, the gears are just really short lol

just for some info... power ups are much more dangerous then clutching it up. power wheelies are just that... power. the higher you wanna go the more power you have to put to the ground. if inexperienced riders begin doing this and wanting to go higher they give it too much and its goin over... period. i have seen this happen to 3 riders they all knew about the rear brake but paniced. with clutch wheelies (in second never first) you have much more throttle control, its not near as touchy and after some practice you know just how much throttle to give to get how ever high you want. its when you under power it and give it more throttle to raise the front end, thats when you flip, just as in a power wheelie. its much scarier at first but youll thank yourself in the end that you skipped power wheelies. any stunt threads will tell you the same thing.

not that i disagree or anything but i like power ups alot more. i have also seen quite a few people bust their ass on clucthing it up. i was scared to even try for a while and i just recently tried it. i felt i had less control because of the ramdom jerking of the power kicking in. it was kinda starteling. when i power it up i get the same consistant power everytime. since i dont blurp the throttle and i just use my arms to load the front end i dont have to give it much throttle at all. powering it up in second is kinda scary though. im goin like 55 60 so i would like to try to clucth it.

Hi zx10 brothers! I'm new to the forums and just bought the zx10 as my first bike, and I absolutely love it! Oh, and before anybody calls me a squid I wear full gear whenever I ride, even when it's 90 outside. Plus, I'm 38 years old so I'm not mentally retarded like the stereotypical teenage squid.
I thought I'd reply to the wheelie thread as my first post because that's what I've been practicing for the past couple weeks. Power wheelies is all I've been doing because popping the clutch is just too damn scary. I always do my power wheelies in first gear at around 5-6k rpm and then just crank the throttle. I try my best to ease off the throttle when it gets near the balance point but I usually chicken out and drop the front wheel. I've never come close to flipping the bike over. I'm pretty inconsistent so far and will carry a wheelie for maybe 80-120ft. Heck, sometimes I can't even get the front wheel off the ground. LOL. Fear is king.
Like everybody has already said, practice, practice, practice, is the only way you'll become comfortable and skilled at wheelies. I'm still a novice at riding but I've been practicing my butt off and I'm getting better. I've signed up for my first performance school track day in two weeks. I plan taking 3 classes and getting my track license. Then I'll start racing my bike and hopefully become a skilled and respectable rider. :

Thanks max. I think the bike looks dead sexy in red.
I want to mention one more thing about practicing wheelies...try not to do it too much on the freeway. Yesterday I was going up and down a stretch of I-5 for about 20 mins doing wheelies. Well, as I was exiting the freeway, I see a highway patrol car parked near the overpass. At the same time, I see this truck slam on the brakes to stop next to the patrol car. A guy jumps out of his truck, runs over to the cop car and he starts pointing at me while I'm sitting at the light.
About thirty seconds later, I've got the patrol car up my ass with the lights on. I pull over, hop off my bike and remove my helmet. First thing out of her mouth, this was a female cop that looked like a dike, was "Give me a reason why I shouldn't impound your bike right now." I simply said why? She tells me that four people had called the cops to complain about a guy doing wheelies on the freeway. I tell her that the front wheel just comes off the ground when accelerating and I wasn't doing it on purpose.
Anyhow, she runs my license, which is clean as a whistle, and I still only have my permit, so she naturally believes that I'm a newbie rider that is having problems controlling the bike. When she hands me back my license, she says to me, "If you can't handle the bike then maybe you shouldn't be riding it." I tell her it's my first bike and I'm still learning. The whole time she has this pissed off look on her face. I say thanks and she drives off.
I'll stick to practicing wheelies on the back roads and just pull the occasional wheelie on the highway.

powering up wheelies just seems to be the most comfortable way to do it... i had 06 gsxr 600 that i could power up in 3rd and 4th gear with no problems it just seems so much more stable to get it up and keep it goin then tryin to clutch it.. now i have a 96 zx7r that im just getting used to its completely different than the gsxr, its harder to get up but i still refuse to clutch it.

I have been riding rockets for close to 8 years, and have yet to purposely do a power wheelie. Ive clutched every bike Ive owned and even all the quads Ive raced I clutch them. Its all what feels comfortable to you. The more threads i read about power wheelies, the more Im tempted to start trying them more. Ive always felt if your using the clutch to bring it up, its alot easier to grab the clutch when shifting or if your ass puckers too much and you wanna come back down.
