Vaseline on bike forks

Another “tip” from my weird bike mechanic:

To smear Vaseline on to the fork of the bike just above the seals to aid lubrication and to clean the seals from dust and debris as it goes in and out. For them to last longer.

Variant: To fill the dust rings on the inner side with Vaseline for the same effect.
I think it could actually work.

Good tip or more rubbish?
Regards.

I was thinking that maybe it may even be counterproductive. The Vaseline on the outside of the front shocks may attract abrasive stuff that then would be taken in to the fork seals and damage them.

Took the words right out of my mouth, verbatim.

I think this tip could actually be good, but only to clean the fork seals; smear it on, then make the front suspension work a little without riding the bike, and then wipe it off!
I don’t think it can harm it that way.

And yes; the dude is wacko!

i think his mech. is saying PUT THE VAS UNDER THE DUST SEAL...... that way the dust seal wipes the fork as it moves up and down .... you would still prob. end up with a very light film on the fork tube that would collect dirt.....
so try it and let us know how it goes.....

I think he wants to use the Vaseline for another reason.

Run, Run. . . . . . . . . far away to another mechanic.

I wouldn’t experiment on my Kawasaki but I cleaned the front fork of a big scooter I own and the Vaseline came out all dirty from the seals, I wiped it off and repeated the procedure until it came out clean, and then I removed it completely. I would say it does work for cleaning the seals if you care to wipe it off and leave no sign of the Vaseline afterwards.
