my first oil change! Re post from 7r forum

I have never changed oil before in a motorcycle or a car. I know a few things but not many. I also dont have a manual yet.

the things i know
Bike has to be at operating temp
Fill new filter with new oil
rub gasket with oil
specfic motorcycle oil

Things i dont know
What is the proper oil weight ex. 10w30 5w30
How many quarts
Do the filter and drainplug get torque when re installing.

Im a newbie so if someone can walk me through it would be great so i dont screw up

You should at least get an owner's manual if not a shop manual if you intend on doing some of the maintenance yourself. It will give you figures like oil capacity, suggested oil weight specs, and step-by-step instructions on changing oil and what regular maintenance needs doing. Filling the filter with oil probably won't hurt, but it isn't necessary. The oil pump picks up from the bottom of the sump which is where most filters are located anyway. As long as you have thr proper oil level before running the motor, no probs. You won't be able to fill to the full listed oil capacity until after you've run the motor for a minute or two and let the oil circulate. After that, shut it off, let it settle and top up to the mark as needed. And if you get it up to proper operating temp before draining, you're going to burn the piss out of your fingers pulling the drain plug. Just warm is enough to get the oil to drain.

Fill till it is half way in the site glass, or top mark on dip stick. Don't overfill because bike will smoke. I run 10W40. Tighten filter till snug then another 1/4 turn. Torque on drain is around 22nm, or 15ft.lbs...Or as a German would say gudentite! Make sure bike is level not sitting on side stand. If your filter is mounted sideways don't fill the filter, it's messy if you do. I use a old antifreeze gallon tub, and cut the side out. It fits nice under the bike, and keeps the mess down. If drain plug has a aluminum crush washer replace it. Kudos for trying to do it yourself bud!
