Proper Oil Level
ZX-14 Question: Is the oil level reading accurate with the bike on a rear stand? I recently had my oil changed (1st service) and decided to add a little more oil as it was barely at the lower mark. I filled the oil up to a point just under the upper mark. However when I take her off the rear stand and level her up, it appears the oil is over the upper mark. Is this a problem?
If so, how do I remove the excess oil without redoing the entire oil change? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If it's just a little bit over the mark, I wouldn't worry about it. But if it's really freaking you out then just loosen up the drain bolt until it starts seeping a bit. Let a little out and tighten her back up.

As was said, it should be level (parallel to the ground) when you read the level. As was also said, a little high is nothing to be concerned about.

I would do the cautious thing and drain it back to proper level. Too much in the sump could lead to oil pumping past the rings or excess oil in the airbox.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate your help. I've drained a little oil and had the Misses make sure the bike was level while I re-read the gauge. She's all good now. (The bike that is. Still working on reading the wifes gauge, level or not.)

NOTE: I had to much oil in my bike last week and noticed a power drop in mid-range to high range area. this is a good indication lol. fixed the problem.

I just changed my oil last night (zx-10) and i put in 3 quarts. when i turned the bike on for a little bit then turned off and le it sit for a bit, the oil was about in the middle of the little window/gauge. this morning i looked and i cant see any oil through the oil window. do i need to add more? i want to make sure the accurate reading is when the bike is cold. thanks

as stated above LEVEL AND UPRIGHT... let it sit a minute to get the oil over to the window (ive actaully had to lean mine towards the window to get the oil to come up the window) once your happy its done going up/down then you can see where its at..... add as needed with it LEVEL AND UPRIGHT... start it and let it idle for 10sec (no reving it) , shut it off and let it sit a minute, read again....adjust as needed....

if you have an 07-08 its not oil level, its a bad gasket and it was a factory authorized repair if your bike leaked. i hope they didnt charge you! if they did, go get your money back because the replacement is free.
