N00b wants to do an Oilchange

I have a 99 Zx9r which is my first bike and i know nothing about bikes

is changing the oil is the same as changing oil on a car ?

can someone help me out with the basics

Do i just drain the oil pan/ replace the oil filter and fill it back up ? how do i know when its full ?

What is a good oil filter and oil to use for my zx with 25K's

Drain oil replace oil filter then fill her back up with oil....buy a 4 litre / 1 gallon jug and after having put in between 3 and 3 and a half litres start the bike , oil pressure light should turn off after a few seconds, stop the engine then let the bike rest while its standing straight and perfetly vertical....keep adding oil until the oil level in the sight glass on the right side of the motor reaches the upper limit (two lines next to the sight glass, minimum and maximum oil levels)

good filter is the kawasaki original, ok filters are champion, nice filters are the k&n cuz they have a useful 17mm nut welded on so theyre easier to screw on....if you want to try out special filters that are re-usable and washable or claim super micron ratings go ahead but i personally wouldnt. Good oil is semi synthetic 10w40 motorcycle oil, better oil is fully synth motorcycle oil and 10w50 for hot climates and 5w40 for colder areas where cold starting is difficult. If your oil has JASO MA genuinely stamped on the bottle then its exactly what your bike needs.

Any filter, bike, car, boat etc. always fill with oil first. Even if it mounts sideways, get as much oil in it first.

invite a friend/rider over with some experience. Buy them some lunch or dinner w/non-alcoholic drinks. Buy them some cigarettes maybe. Let them watch you and give you pointers and feedback.

or

Maybe ride your bike over to this person's house because they have the correct tools for the job. You just bring the oil and filter in a tankbag or backpak. He or she can still watch you do it. I like this one better.

i have always wondered why there is no quick lube places for motorcycles, like they have for cars, I mean if there was such a place I would imagine them to be slammed busy especially in the season, for those that only ride the good stuff, I change my own but there has been times out on a road trip both car/truck and bike , when the oil needs a change, so pay the 25 buckeroos for the cars, and a 100+??? for a bike WTF? is with that.

Where is the oil filler at? I have an 03 636. I'm not really sure. I found the cap on the lower right side of the bike (as you sit on it) I pulled off the cap, and I see the transmission. I see the clutch cable on top and when I squeeze it, I see the gears move a bit.

The oil filter on your bike is on the lower, front, left side. If you've ever seen an oil filter before, you will notice it when you take the left side fairings off.

I know where the oil filter is, I need to know where to refill the oil at! I think that it is the lower right side, as I sit on the bike.

There are- they're called Harley Boutiques. They'll be happy to fill you up with Harley oil and change your Harley filter, and while you wait, you can buy some Harley T-shirts, Harley underwear and Harley shot glasses.

It is on the bottom right right behind the clutch cable there is a little cap that you can unscrew and bam! a place to put your oil in

Also I would totally buy a Harley toilet seat if I had a Harley
