tips: '07 zx6r - oil change

has anyone seen how the stealerships change the oil filter without causing a mess?

methinks a 1 liter coke bottle slipped over the catch 'trough' might work, but i haven't tried it yet.

Ive never seen em do it, but when i change my oil i just cut an oil can in half and leave it under the filter so it drains out into a oil canister and it actually keeps it really clean!

I let the oil drain out for a good 30 minutes before I loosen the filter. I sneak a blue shop towel in the crevice beteen the oil filter and the oil filter drain guard to soak up any oil.

my first service cost $150. the MFers at kawasaki of pasadena are lucky to all still have thumbs.

I've built a 'modified funnel out of a 1 liter coke bottle & will let y'all know how it works in 500 miles.

yeah, the stealarship made a mess when they changed my oil and lubed and tightened my chain, so from here on out I will be doing all mech. work. and when I say "made a mess" I mean that they left oil all at the bottom of the bike and some on the sides...unimpressive.

I just stuffed a bunch of shop towels under the filter and removed it. Some oil still ran down the inside of the faring and dripped out the bottom .

Use a shallow pan to drain into since the bike sits low, I quickly realized a standard drain pan for cars does not work.

I used some degreaser to clean up the mess after I got the oil changed.

Kawi should have made some better provisions to catch the oil from the filter IMO.

here is a tip for draining you bike out, measure the bucket as the bike sits on its kickstand unless you have spools and a stand either way will work....

take a standard 5 gallon bucket.

cut it just low enough to slide it underneath your bike.

it will be exactly enough to drain all of the oil out of your motorcycle as well as the runoff from the filter.

please dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way.

no special trick guys. stand the bike up straight for a minute or 2. then it's just like a normal oil change

i'm a little wierd. i don't like oil or road grime on my engine.

since i've had the valve cover gasket leak i've removed my fairings (except for the upper) so I can keep everything clean.

Did it today. Finally. Drained it for 15 minutes and when I pulled the filter maybe 1/2 ounce came out. Super easy oil change. Made me feel stupid since I was so worried about screwing the bike up. LOL...

I drained the oil real quick and then took the filter off soaking the entire side of my engine and inside fairing with oil. then I put the new filter on, filled her up and carefully shot some engine cleaner inside the fairing and on the engine to clean it up.

It was a F@$#$%&^&**&^!King mess, believe me.

Thanks for the info on letting it drain for a while.

Anyone to works at the dealership is an SOB. I called and made an appointment and went in and they denied the whole thing because of an "important" customer. kawasaki dealership workers can lick my testies.

A clean oil change

Take your lower fairing off...take out oil plug and later (10 minutes) replace your filter.
It's very easy to take off your fairing. The one thing you'll learn is replacing those black, plastic push pins. It is fairly eash once you back the screw out, pinch together...then connect both lower fairings back together.
I always put down a beach towel to lay my fairing on.
