How does Amsoil compare?
Forgive my ignorance, but I have no prior experience with Amsoil. I'm curious to learn more about lubricants and such...
For the last seven years, I've been using Red Line oil - mainly because I get a good deal on it and it seems to be better than the best Mobil1 stuff out there.
How would Amsoil compare to the Red Line brand? I'm not looking for a war of oils, just want is a comparable in your opinion for the motorcycles we love to ride?
Motorcycles are different than cars, since our oil is used in the tranny and throughout the engine in one complete system, so the oil demands are higher IMHO.
Thoughts??

i have tried it in my dragbike. i always used mobil 1 in my zx11 dragbike running 8.90's. when i switched to amsoil bike dropped to low 8.8's without any other changes. this is very good oil. i have not used red line oil products.

I had the same thing happen when I switched to Royal Purple......
Get a VERY good grade oil, and use it.....
If walmart carries it, it is not in the upper grade of oil.....
AMSoil, Royal Purple, Redline, Motul, etc.

Check out the test results at this link http://www.ezlubes.com/product_info/g2156.pdf I believe Redline is included in the test, as well as Royal Purple.

Amsoil paid independent labs to do the test. Amsoil has been doing testing like this for over 30 years now naming the brands tested along with the results. If the data was inaccurate Amsoil would have been sued by the large oil companies. Oil companies often sue others due to false advertising claims. Amsoil has never been sued for their test data as it is done per industry standards and the results are the results. If you look at the data carefully you will see that Amsoil did not come in first in every test category. Seems like if they paid for it they would be first across the board don't you think?

Of course not, cuz then we'd be certain that it was a rigged test! Id pay for the test to show my product to come first in enough tests to be seen as positive but still be believable :p Anyway its not like i don't believe the test, motorcycle magazines do tests and in the end they all pretty much say the same thing, getting a damn good semi or fully synth motorcycle oil from a reputable brandand youe already miles ahead of 90% of the people out there who buy their own oils....

The AMSOIL Tests were performed by some of the Top Testing Facilities in the US and at least one of those is Non-Profit. They cannot afford to be biased, bought or associated with anything that would give the look of impropriety. If the Lab is ISO Certified they are held to the highest Standards and cannot afford to lose those credentials which means the tests have to be totally duplicatable.
That is why ASTM ans SAE testing are used. The human hand cannot be involved and they are duplicatable, unlike the "One Armed Bandit" tests everyone fell prey to on TV and at demonstrations.

Yeah I agree, getting a damn good semi or fully synth motorcycle oil from a reputable brand and your already miles ahead of 90% of the people out there who buy their own oils.... And I've been extremely happy with the two Royal Products I use. I can really feel the difference after switching my 08zx6r from Kawi oil to RP. Even smoother shifts and more responsive motor:)

I don't know much as i've only changed my oil twice since i got it. I did the first service with just some Kawi crap at 500 miles... Then at 1000 i switched to Amsoil fully synth. WOW! huge difference in shifting and and i can notice how much smoother and quiter the engine is... I like amsoil but i also got it pretty cheap... bought in bulk...

I am a new member, this is my first posting. I am a Harley guy at heart. Presently own a few Hogs but recently picked up a 1996 zx1100. It's something I have wanted for a while now and found this one in perfect condition with 16,000 miles on it. And what a blast!
I have always been confused with bike oil / automobile oil issue. I presently run 20/50 semi synthetic in my Harleys. What about the zx1100? The guys at the bike dealer claim there is a difference between the two and not using the correct oil can lead to huge problems. One guy told me it would screw up my clutch?
So what gives? Seems you guys are talking Redline, Amsoil, etc? Is there a difference between Bike and Car engine oils that I should be aware of, or is that a bunch of nonsense.
BTW, great site
Thanks

bought a 2007 ZX10 back at the end of 2006. at 13000 miles we did some headwork and replaced the cams and cleaned up the intake a bit. I'm at 33,500 miles now. almost 13,000 miles are track miles. I've used Motul 10w40 full synthetic since the first oil change and she is still running strong. she gets her oil changes every 2500 miles and after every track day and i use an OE filter every time.
at first i used Motul because it was the best for the price since a friend owns a local shop and gets amazing deals from the motul rep. However, I went to pick up another 4 litre jug last week and we had completley run out so i bought 4 quarts of Amsoil full synthetic. ill let yall know how it works out in the 10.

Excellent question really...I was just presented a study that indicates Golden Spectro to be the top dog. I'm not a chemical engineer, so I don't claim to know a whole lot about the real issues surrounding pro/cons of specific oils vs another. I know there are certain oils that have been recognized as generally "good" oil and I stick with that. For me, I stick with a few favorites; Motul, Golden Spectro, Castrol, or Repsol.

Just changed over to Amsoil Synthetic at 5800 miles
A couple of things are really noticable. 1. Engine runs smoother & quieter. 2. Engine temp is lower. 4. Lower rpm 5. Very smooth clutchless upshifting. Overall after researching I am very please with Amsoil. Wish I would've dropped it in sooner. Cost me $37 for 4 quarts (Carquest).

I read a study that said Motul 4T syn is the best motorcycle oil followed by Mobil 1 4T, Amsoil and Golden Spectro. The 4T designation is important for engines with common sump/gearbox since it has to do with anti-shear additives. Any good 4T synthetic will do. Car oils are sometimes not the best because of 'friction modifiers" which are additives designed to increase fuel mileage, but can cause the wet clutch of a motorcycle to slip. Some oils designed for diesel engines such as Rotella can be used in a bike engine due to the absence of these friction modifiers.
