beginner 05 ninja 250

ok so i just got my first bike its a 2005 ninja 250. i've ridden bikes before but never thought of it till today... i don't know how to warm it up... kind of embarrassing but i had some trouble today with it. it works just fine my friend has taken it for a spin... except for me. so this is what i did...
1. turned fuel tap ON
2. ignition On
3. engine stop switch Run
4. choke all the way
5. pushed starter

it started right up rpm started going up so i started slowly closing the choke, left it halfway for a while, rpm got almost to 5 i slowly pushed choke all the way back. it was good for a while then engine started going lower gave it some throttle then i just kinda let it do whatever it was gonna do and turned off, i turned it on and tried again but couldn't get it to idle. if anyone could give me step by step instructions i'd appreciate it a lot.
