Hello everyone

Hi!

So, I'm Falkon45.

Just picked up a 99 zx7r project. It's technically, my second bike (first was a failed 77 Yamaha XS750 cafe project), And the first one I intend to finish and ride.

Unfortunately, it's also in the midst of three project cars, a few bicycle builds, and two kids. Lol.

Anyway, I'm a former Navy gas turbine mechanic, currently a maintenance tech on an oil platform, and trying to fit all these builds into daily life.

So far, I'm tearing down little stuff, And upgrading/modifying as needed. So far, the bike had a full muzzy exhaust and k&n filter, but not sure of the jet kit. Tearing down the carb soon to see. The usual clutch pushrod seal issue, and had a terrible naked Betty Boop paint job on it. I'll post pictures as soon as I get back into my Photobucket account.

It also has some sketchy wiring for the lights and starter relay I need to sort out.

I probably shouldn't have for this for my first bike, lol.

Anyway, glad to be here. Been lurking for the last month, and finally decided to join.

It's a worthwhile project to save any 7. Especially one subjected the a paint job like that. Welcome to the forum.

Huge run. Thankfully, it's only temporary. The fairing had been patched up quite a few times. Found some new stuff locally that I'll pick up later this month.

The tank is bare tits. Sorry for the censorship. Lol.

My makeshift paint booth. Lol. Tried to finish the last 6 pieces with a can and a half of plastidip. Almost got it. Sorry for so few pictures. Most of this was documented by video.

Started wrapping the muzzy. Wrapping it isn't hard. Measuring the wrap and getting the ties to stay are apparently where I suck at.

Was tempted to go street fighter at this point, but opted to keep the fairing. Tried to buy a cheap zx6r listed on cl for a naked project, but the guy never responded. Probably due the best. Lol

Also, thank you everyone for the warm welcome. Hopefully, I'll learn a lot more, and maybe be able to pass on some knowledge.

P models are hella easy to get aftermarket fairings of various quality. The 6/7 year run on the showroom floor has made for lots of aftermarket stuff compared to earlier years of ZX-7.
Ebay Chinese plastic already painted fairings to maybe fiberglass ones from Airtech.
You have choice.
Hope you avoid the street fighter avenue myself 😬

Agreed, street fightering a bike is only one step up from driving a Ford Taurus on the "I've given up" scale.

Lol. Yeah. I'm keeping the fairing. Getting some new Chinese plastic ones from a guy down here. The bike just looks better with it.

I love street fighters, but this begs for the fairings. I'm thinking about getting some carbon fiber ram air tubes listed on eBay. The previous owner decided to drill holes into the intake tubes to mount turn signals on the intake covers. That's just part of the questionable wiring. I'm intending to make the bike look much sleeker and more refined than when I got it. The gray is somewhat in tribute to my time in the Navy (Haze gray and underway!!!). I'm trying to not do a tear down to bare frame, but it's looking more and more like a good idea. But I really want to ride this thing. Lol.

Hello everyone

Welcome!

Good project to have.

I would suggest getting an oem service manual.
Always comes in handy.
You can get on CD for cheap or find paperback on ebay.
kawi sells them for about 120$ if you want new.

I like having the book vs CD as its quicker to thumb through.

Make a list of what the problems are and i bet there will be plenty of back up for ya.

Thanks keepitgreen.

Just ordered some other goodies for the bike. Nothing major. Just a gas cap and a fairing bolt kit. Green, as green is my favorite color, and still in keeping with the kawi namesake... I guess. Lol. Pictures of that sooner or later. I need to change out the coils anyway, so wondering what "high performance" coils people are using.
