Carbon Fiber... Melting?!

When I was shopping for an exhaust for my 6RR, I was discussing the differences between stainless steel, titanium, and carbon fiber. In terms of weight, what we came down to was Carbon Fiber > Titanium > Stainless Steel, with SS being the heaviest. Now the only downside to carbon fiber, he told me, was that it melts! and when your in stop and go traffic you actually need to shut your bike off to stop it from melting... any basis in this? I mean hes a parts dealer and i trust him but that seems a little far fetched...

Well i've never heard of that happening!!! I have a dual carbon fibers akta on my 06 zx10r and have never had a problem with them and all my buddies have carbon fiber pipes and don't have any issues. I think your parts deals need to put down his crack pipe lol

I think they heat proof the carbon fibre before letting it out from the factory

read this... http://pslc.ws/macrog/carfsyn.htm a good read,in laymans terms, sorta!
it seems in the manufacturing processes(s), the temps used can be any where around and up to 1300 degrees c. so i seriously doubt it "melts". ive had carbon pipes on my vtr and they were always cooler to the touch than the s.steel originals.

Thought so. Never hurts to make sure... esp. at the price they charge for carbon fiber these days. Look at the brightside though... when first invented, it was estimated that carbon fiber would cost around 12 million a pound to manufacture...
