changing my own tires?

i got a great deal on a set of track DOTs (Dunlop N Tech with about 12 miles on them) and was wondering how hard it is to change my own tire. the local bike shop wants to charge me 35.00 each. that seems kinda steep. i'd rather do it myself. anybody done this? if so how big of a pain was it? and waht about the balancing?

I changed the tires myself on a 1978 Honda Twinstar. They were small and 2-plys and that took me about 3 hours and 2 pints of blood. Plus I can't balance them myself. Pay the $35. Balancing wasn't necessary on a bike that maxes at 70mph, but You'll notice it on the 700.

Yeah I'd pay that.
There is a thread in here somewhere somebody bought a tire changer from harbor freight tools and said it works really well but he has some tips and other stuff in there. Do a search it might answer some questions for you.

yeah absolute pain in the arse and will cost your more than $35 in swear jar donations buy the end of each tire. It took the weight of a caravan trailer (including caravan) to break the bead on my tire.

$35 each if you drop the bike off? Because you can usually save a ton by pulling the wheels yourself. I had two mounted/balanced a month ago at the Yamaha shop for $40.

As for mounting yourself, you may as well let the shop do it if you dont have a way to balance them. Its not going to save you much money when you still have to carry them in and get them balanced.

Agree with the other posters... spend the money.. .because you want to be sure your tires are set up right especially if you're hitting 120-180 mph. I know I feel better knowing the shop has done it.

I get a better price as well for dropping off my rims and having the shop do them. Usually about $15 per tire. $30 for that kind of peace of mind is cheap.

Glad you got it done for free though... free is always "more gooder"

As long as he knows what he's doing and can balance properly.

Yup, that was me. Love the tire changer. It has already paid for itself 2 times over!
