Unhappy Bike's starter motor won't run sometimes

I just got this bike, 01 zx6r, and i've had it not want to start on me twice in the last 2 weeks. I'll go to hit the starter switch and it won't do anything, no noises at all. The first time i did it i just hit it a couple more times and then the bike started up. Last night when it did started messing up again, that if i pulled the clutch all the way down to the grip it would go but not if i used the 2 finger pull. When this happened i figured the cable needed to be adjusted but later that night i was able to start the bike without the clutch even pulled. I thought just like a car, the bike isn't supposed to start without the clutch pulled. What do you guys think?

Oh and last night i started having problems shifting past 3rd, it would take me a few trys before it would shift. I don't know if the two are related or if it helps any.

I know its a silly question but are you sure you have it in Neutral. You wont need the clutch at all in Neutral and if the stand is down and your in gear than the safety switch may have a loose wire. This safety switch stops the bike starting without the clutch in and the stands down.

it's not a silly question, i think i wasn't paying attention and the tranny was in gear but it was only half way in. it turns out there was nothing wrong with the starter, it was the positioning of the shiftlinkage due to the footrest.
