need a lot of help (story included)

alright, lets begin the story. I bought a 1991 zx7r a year ago, a couple days after i bought it i found out that the gas tank had a leak in it (found out because it was smelling up my garage and my whole house). i was planning on getting this fixed, then some radiator hose cracked and coolant leaked out. I was on my way home to fix the bike when i crashed!! i had the side fairings off because i didn't want any corrosion to the fairings from the coolant ( even though coolant doesn't corrode). anyways i went down in grass, tore off part of the water pump assembly, the kickstand switch and the entire coolant hosing of the left side along with completely bending back my gear shifter pedal. anyways a couple weeks later, i bought all the parts to fix the bike, but i had put water in the cooling system, and it was already rusted through. the kickstand switch was malfunctioning and it was 50/50 chance that i could get the thing to work without cutting my engine off. when i get around to fixing all the stuff i fucked up (myself) the coolant system had totally rusted through (because i had filled the cooling system with water) and the bike would overheat after 15 min or so. so the bike sat in my garage as i was fed up with it and there it sat for 7 months or so. i got excited about riding again talking to this girl, and took it to a new bike shop that opened up across from my work. told them to do a full diagnostics on the bike and fix my kickstand switch, my cooling system, and some other minor stuff. anyways after i get my bike back, they tell me they didn't fix my kickstand switch, told me that it COULD be the clutch and said itd be another 75$ to diagnose. i said fuck you and took my bike and left ( after they dropped it off) and there in my garage my bike sits for another few months. recently i was thinkn of selln my bike and my car and getting a ducati monster or something. but i thought maybe i should just invest all of january when i have no school, and make this bike nice and reliable. who knows what problems you take on when you buy a used bike. and i'm pretty much broke.

anyways what i know thats wrong with the bike now is either the kickstand switch is messed up on the harness ( i bought a new switch and it still doesnt work) or its the clutch, whenever i crank the bike, and put it in first gear it kills. the fork seal is busted. the engine leaks oil. the back break needs tweaking, the front fairing needs to be fiber glassed. and overall paint and some other minor stuff.

i am pretty mechanically able, i have the manual to the bike. My basic question is should i invest the time, and perhaps 500$ more to fix this bike myself, what i wanna do is replace all the gaskets in the engine, take apart and clean the engine, clean it overall, and repaint/fiberglass the fairings. is it simple enough to do? looks aren't that important, as long as i can get is safe and running reliably. the bikes top end was rebuilt, and the bike has 39k miles on it overall. also, is there any advice that anyone can give me about things i should know before i begin this journey, thanks for reading!!! -bryan

Ducati Monster is a nice bike.

Unless you're really attached to the bike, maybe you should consider parting it out. I myself have thought about it; the blue book on these bikes isn't alot. If you are going to try to fix it, forget about fiberglass and paint, buy used.
