odd noise coming from rear wheel. HELP!

The other day i was riding my bike and a type of metal clak'ing sound started coming from the rear wheel. I've put the bike up on stands and put it into gear and it seems like the noise is coming from my wheel itself. When i loosen the rear axle nut and put the bike in gear it wont make the noise but right when i tighten it back up the noise starts again.

I've already taken it apart checked the bearings, they spun smoothly and didnt have any noticeable dents in them. The chain is only about 300 miles old and adjusted properly. My wheels were balanced the same time i replaced the chain. My sprocket is a Driven 520 45 tooth sprocket used a couple K, but is still in good shape and straight.

I have no idea what this is and my bike is my daily driver so i need to fix what ever it is. I'm trying to figure it out at home so i dont have to fork out $$$ taking it to a bike shop. Any ideas on what to check would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure your wheel spacers are installed right? Since it seems to happen when torqued up it should be related to your parts stack-up.

When you spin your wheel bearings are they smooth but tight not just spin reel feel and loose, definatly check the spacers to make sure the are installed right and check your chain for any kinks like at the master link.
