1991 ZX-7 Clutch?

Hey guys,

This is my first post on the website- its nice to see a popular forum on ZX's! I just got a 1991 ZX7 Ninja and I have a technical scenario: I'm on the highway crusing at about 60mph in 4th gear lets say at 8000rpm. I've got a truck that I want to pass so I downshift to 3rd gear at 10000rpm and accelerate hard. My engine revs up to 13000rpm but I'm not gaining any speed. Is that a clutch issue? Thoughts? It happens through all the gears except the 1st and it only happens when I really accelerate hard. If I take it easy and gently accelerate I can gain speed....

Thoughts? Chris.

see what others say but the clutch maybe the problem unless you have real transmission issues. Did you check the fluids and make sure they were ok?

It sounds like you need a new clutch... You didnt run a fully synthetic oil thats not made specifically for bikes did you? If so thats your problem, Email me at brian@stdreams.com and ill get you a deal on a new set of discs...

Man I know the 91 92 ZX7's like the back of my hand had a 92 ZX7 for years I can tell you for a fact that your cluch IS going out. E Z fix!!!! Just replace the fibers and when you take it apart the steel plates will most likly have burnt spots. You should replace them but if you don't want to spend the extra cash you could just lightly sand them and they should be fine.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've now noticed that its only slipping in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. Still think that its the clutch? Could it be something to do with the gears in the tranny?

Nope the cluch is going out!!!! In high gears the gear raito changes so that the torqe is on the higher end, It useally only slips in higher gears at first 3rd or higher around 6-7 rpm on hard excelaration gradualy getting wourse. I promise you thats it.

E Z to fix your self don't pay someone to do it. Just replace the fibers and when you take it apart the steel plates will most likly have burnt spots. You should replace them but if you don't want to spend the extra cash you could just lightly sand them and they should be fine. PUT THEM BACK IN THE SAME ORDER you removed them. Some of the ticknesses change.
