neat/odd little problem. suggestions?

I've a 2003 ZX9R, just changed the oil and the spark plugs...I had hoped the new plugs would fix the problem, but no such luck.

When I start my bike, it'll kick in and start and go....nooo problems. After I ride for a bit and get to my destination, I turn my bike off. Herein comes the problem. After turning the bike off, it will not start again....at least not until *she* is ready.

What I mean is, hit the starter and it'll try and try and try. Sometimes it'll burp, as if it were going to turn over, but not....but most of the time it just keeps turning and turning without doing anything else.

After a while of turning off the bike, and turning it on again, and after sitting for 5-10 minutes, it'll start again. When it does decide to start, it does so without any problems at all, as if nothing were wrong to begin with.

Ideas?

Bike might be running too lean. This makes it hard to start when hot.

Perhaps try your carb float settings, do you get fuel starvation at prolonged high speed running ? is so could be the gas cap air vent blocked...Air filer ok? clean? Have you fitted an aftermarket end can that has upset carburation..
And of course are all the valve clearances in tolerance ???
Best of luck,
Steve ( UK)

Hubby's got a '84 GPz900R and like the girl with the curl, when it's good it's VERY good, when it's bad it's horrid.
Will go fantastic for a couple of weeks regular riding then for no reason that we've been able to see, will 'miss' whilst riding along. Sometimes the miss continues and the bike grinds to a halt. Can wind it over til the starter clutch is complaining but it won't start. Leave it five minutes and it'll go.
At it's worst, we'll get about 2km down the road then stop again. Sometimes it'll go for weeks without playing up.
Carbies were cleaned out about 2 months ago (just before we bought it, so I don't know if it was a problem before). Appears to be getting adequate fuel, (although I see air bubbles going through the filter as it is running but stationary). Idling is uneven, Hubby's description is 'he feels a clunk then the idling drops and becomes uneven.' Checked vacuum pipe and sucked and got a strong flow of fuel.
Pulled number 4 plug lead off when it played up today and I didn't feel any 'kick' from the electrics. Put the lead back on, had a smoke and started it up no probs. Flogged it for 100km, two up and performed perfectly. The fuel filter appears to be flowing freely, although it has a few bubbles churning in it when the engine is running. Not sure how long it's been on though (only had the bike for a few weeks) so will change it over tomorrow in case that's it.
It has the same effect as if you were riding along and you flick the kill switch off and then back on.
Does anyone have any idea what could be happening?
It's driving us up the wall. (And not on the bike either)
BTW, when it cuts out all the idiot lights stay on.
