Smooth out that engine.... even more
I have about 9100miles on my Concours14 now and was going thru the periodic maintainence chart. On page 392 of the service manual it explains the procedure for adjusting the two balancers on the crankshaft.
You need to remove the right side middle fairing and side fairing to do this
After fully warming the engine, doing the balancer towards the front of the motor first, loosen the clamp bolt with an 8mm box wrench, and using a flat blade screwdriver, turn the balancer shaft clockwise until you start to hear a slight screeching sound, then back it off counter-clockwise slightly and lock the clamp bolt again. Then do the same for the balancer towards the rear of the bike.
My front balancer was out almost 3/4 of a turn!.. The rear one wasn't out much at all.. It made a big difference on the smoothness of the motor. And its probably the easiest thing to do on the motor..
Once the real winter weather comes in here.. (snow) I plan on doing the throttle-body syncronization. I did check mine today and if my gauges are still working correctly I am all within specs, but I could fuss with them more to make them perfect. This procedure unlike the first one takes special tools alot of patience and practically dismantling the bike just to get it done.
Like I said.. a winter project some saturday when I cant ride. Both of these procedures can really smooth that baby out.
Next weekend I'm off to WV for a Sport-Touring.Net Winter Meet. I'm leaving for WV Friday.. we have about a 200mi loop planned for Saturday... Then meander home on Sunday. Anyone from the area want to go? Let me know before next Friday.
See you on the road,
Jerry
