New Rubber Hugger

In the absence of a rear hugger in the forseeable future (I know various suppliers say "it is in development") I have made my own from ribbed rubber sheet.
I just can't hold with that electronic regulator thing being right in the blast of rear wheel spray, no matter how good the seals on the box and wiring are. Ditto the rear shock.
I used 4mm ribbed rubber sheet. Bottom flap attached to swing arm using tie wraps and top one attached to the plastic underneath moulding using large pop rivets (yes there is gap behind, just ned to avoid part of loom on RH side), so the two flaps are actually separate but slide over each other as the rear suspension moves.
I put the bottom flap on to try protect the susp linkage underneath.
The top flap is close to rear wheel so I put a couple of tie wraps from middle of flap to susp spring top hold forward. Cr-p engineering, but works
Looks a bit of a Horlicks on the pics but is all but invisible when the wheel is in place. I am happier now
I am also considering a small flap attached to two of those rear sump bolts with a couple of angle brackets to keep crud off the linkage. It would stop rearward flying stuff off front wheel hitting the linkage but the bulge on the sump may do that. I shall see what the underneath looks like when I have done a few miles. Did similar things on my old ST100 to protect collector box. It worked a treat.

Looks effective, despite the lack of style

But... wouldn't the top one be big enough once you're sitting on it, to me it looks like the bottom one would be way down there once loaded, but I'd hate to question your engineering reasons

look forward to your road-test report

I dont think so because at the front of the SA there is little movement. The bottom one merely protects the susp linkage. The bottom one gets no closer to the road, loaded or not ,as it's fixed to the SA. I would rather have lack of style than crud all over the shock and the electricgubbingery. Now all back together, tis hardly noticeable. Dont get me wrong, as soon as a hugger (if ever) appears on the market, I will be at the front of the Q.

Good job.

Now if we could just get someone to actually make us a hugger...

hugger

One of my winter projects is to make a hugger for my bike. So after 2 attemps at getting the profile to my liking , I have a hugger. It took me two weekends to get the hugger to the stage where I can spray paint it .
In fact I have already given the hugger 3 coats of black . ( Yes I know I should have used a black gel coat, but I did not want to purchase a gallon of the stuff ). I will be mounting the hugger using the tourque rod M10 cap screws. (The ones towards the rear of the swingarm). I have replaced the stock M10 X 65mm cap screws with M10 X 70mm,why ?.......so that I could mount the hugger without compromising the torque rod bolts. In other words I still wanted to be able to torque the torque rod mounting bolts to the correct spec without damaging the fiberglass. The hugger is desgned to fit tight up to the swingarm, it in fact rests on the large rubber grommet that is in the swingarm

Due to the cold weather the paint is taking longer to dry. Once the paint is dry I will tak some photos of the hugger, both on and off the bike.

No sweat John. I wrongly assumed that if I deleted them from Photobucket, they would stay here. WRONG!
I was just concerned I wouldnt find them on my PC, but they were lurking in a most unlikely file. I was about to give up and suddenly there were the series of IMG files. I juts popped em back on PB and they reappeared by magic.
So, UPDATE
I went out weekend b4 last. 1st time since fitting. Dry roads, very light vestages of salt remains, but odd damp patches and a few puddles.
Got home to find, as expected, white, metal termite dust, all over bike. None on rear shock or elecktrickery thing! Reeesult.
Worked a treat. Lots of clean water (at a distance) from pressure washer got rid of all salt.
When is spring?
