Newbie looking for info on GTR1400 versus FJR 1300

Hello,

First of all I want to say hello to everybody in this forum !

You may find all my personal information and many motorcycle adventures in my website at:

http://pierre.inazores.com

As you see, I'm passionate for mototourism and owned already 4 Yamaha FJR's since 2001.

I read some comparos on the new GTR1400 and the FJR 1300, but since I haven't the opportunity to test-ride the GTR1400, I would very much like to have some input from any of you that eventually owned a FJR before, and can tell me the real pros and cons between those two bikes.

Thank you very much in advance and all the very best !

Hi pierre!

bon tarde :) Nice to read the GTR is on your list for the next bike. I think itś a great bike with some minor negativ points. I too was interested by the FJR but have read some very disapointing posts in FJR forums concerning the '07 model. That's why i have been waiting for the GTR until august and i can tell you, i am more than happy i have waited for it.

regards

marc from luxembourg (where live 75000 portuguese!)

Nope, nope, not gonna do it.

I will say this (I think it's reasonable). People used to compare the ST1300 and the FJR (when both were fairly new) and say that both were very competent, capable sport tourers, but the FJR leaned more toward the sport side, and the ST leaned more toward the touring side of the sport/touring equation. Well now the tide has shifted a bit, and when comparing the FJR and the GTR, I would say that the GTR leans a bit more toward the sport side, and the FJR leans a bit more toward the touring side...between these two bikes. The FJR is sporty, but not as sporty as the GTR. I think the FJR has a slight advantage in the long range ergos department, but that's a VERY subjective thing! I believe by the numbers, the FJR is a little bit roomier, and has more ergonomic adjustability (seat and bars adjustable from the factory). Hard case capacity looks too close to call. In my oppinion, the FJR has a few nice touches that the GTR lacks, but they may not be important to you.

Best suggestion...look for an opportunity to spend a little time with both bikes and play with all the toys. Only you know which features and characteristics are most important to you. You really can't go wrong with either bike, you just need to decide for yourself which one YOU like better.

There...how was that??

It's worth noting that alot of those issues (specifically, poor fuel delivery/hesitation at high altitude) have been addressed on the '08 models, plus some minor tweaks to the brakes, and transmission. There's also a recall now to replace ECUs in the '07 that have the problem.

Like I said in 'that other thread', the biggest advantage the competition has, is they've had more time to learn from their mistakes.
