radiator Gaurd

Does anyone know of a UK supplier of the GTR 1400 rad guard advertised by Projekt D in Taiwan. It gets a good write up and looks good but costs over £100 inc shipping.

Kev, have you seen these. Stainless steel and very similar to the Projekt one.

I honestly think you should be prepared for a fairly drastic cut in airflow through the rad when you install a guard like that.

I was a member for a while over on SVT Performance, the SVT Cobra Mustang site. A problem with our supercharged Cobra Mustangs was heat buildup in the intercooler which led to heat soak in the supercharger and reduced power output.

The Cobra is equipped with a small intercooler radiator fed by coolant separate from the rad with an intercooler pump to cool the intake charge via another heat exchanger (rad) mounted under the supercharger.

Bear with me ! Since the intercooler rad is mounted low in the front of the grille opening, it is subject to road damage.

The guys tried quite a few different designs for guards, different mesh of many sizes and types.

In all cases the guards led to increases in the intercooler fluid temps.

The opposite of the desired results.

I would not be surprised to see the Concours run hotter with a rad guard in place.

The rad guard is needed,Or maybe not ?

If it was, I would tend to want to go with a very small wire mesh diameter and as large open mesh design as practical while still offering some protection.

At the risk of sounding self serving, I believe my fender extender would offer better protection to the rad, and still allow the airflow for cooling.

Sure some risk may still exist from other sources like a bouncing stone, however I believe the risk would be minimal.

Larry.

Old Blue does not own a 1400GTR and manufactures fender extenders that he is enthusiastically flogging on every Concours 14 and 1400GTR forum that I have found.

No other member has complained of a lack of airflow using a radiator screen.

You might also look at a Cox Racing screen. They may be a little cheaper.

Do you have a point in all this ? I own an ST1300 and did the first Concours fender extender for my buddies Connie.

I do make a great fender extender that a lot of guys have purchased and like a lot. I do them one at a time in my garage, my own design etc. I have sold lots of them and that is a problem ?

Just for your information I also make a fender extender for the ZX -14.
You say no other member has mentioned the lack of airflow.
Well also for your information I present this question posed to me by Kango from Australia on the ZX-14 forum :

Hi Larry,
I have one concern regarding the Fender Extender, and that is, does the
FE restrict the airflow to the radiator.
I have fitted a Rad Guard to my 2009 model and that has increased my
running temperature by one bar on the gauge.

I have asked on the Forum if this is ok, and by the replies, it would
appear to be normal.
Here in Western Australia we have a very high temperature most of the
year, today was 32c, so the air flow to the radiator is critical, to stop
the problems of overheating.
I find that theZX14 runs hotter than any bike that I have owned, and
the fact that trying to fix the problem of stone damage may cause me
greater mechanical damage.
I am NOT trying to knock your product, its a great idea,
Its just that this problem may show up after instalation.

And my response:
Actually I think you have encountered a rather common problem with rad guards.

When you place any kind of mesh over a rad it will somewhat restrict airflow.

I know that radiator damage can happen from stuff on the road, and you are right one bar extra temp isn't too bad.

I don't think that the fender extender would interfere with airflow to the point of making the bike run hotter.

The fender extender is a relatively small area behind the tire so I feel any air flow is likely already blocked by the wheel and tire in that area.

I would be inclined to install the fender extender and remove the rad guard to possibly get rid of that extra bar on the temp guage , but that is your choice.

There is no question, heat from any large displacement sport touring bike is a problem in a hot climate. We experience the same thing with all of the large liquid cooled bikes in Canada and the US.

Larry.

So what is your point in saying that I am 'flogging" (in your words) my fender extender ? Or pointing out that I don't own a GTR 1400 ?

I never hid either of those facts. And the pictures sell my fender extenders for me.

As does the positive feedback from everyone who has one.

Does any of what you posted change the fact that I know a little bit about what I am talking about ?

Larry

Oh dear I seem to have started a slanging match with this thread. The reason I intend to fit a rad guard is to protect from stones thrown up by other road users. I have the fender extenda so I I reckon I am reasonably safe from self induced damage. In the UK we dont really have a high temperature issue its normally an issue of frozen hands.

Keep it non personal guys !

I was only trying to help with a little technical info and something to consider.

For some unknown reason the attack came. I guess some people feel the need to act in that fashion.

My focus has always been to help people in our riding hobby and passion, and share info.

When a jab is made in your direction it is only natural to want to defend.
