Kawasaki announces 1.5-liter GTR

The 1400 GTR will have a 1,500 cc engine in 2010. The press announcement was made in Japan and caught the industry by surprise. In the current economic climate, few thought the Japanese manufacturer would launch a new model after a mere 3 years.

Thats a bit crazy to be honest. I read about some of the things that are going to be available on it like infra-red cameras etc.

I don't understand if the 1400GTR engine is the same of ZZR 1400 with less power, why create a model 1500? If they want more power they can use the original engine of ZZR at 180hp, isn't it?

Interesting news.
This is probably simply something like the movement done by BMW with k1200 series...(S, R and GT).
they "upgraded" the engine to 1300 and now they all are k1300 (S,R and GT).
Perhaps they simply make the engine bigger and use it for gtr1500 and zzr 1500.

Regards.

The GTR or C-14 motor isn't detuned, it's retuned for more low-end torque to haul two adults and all their gear. Motors are the same from the head gasket down. Variable valve timing set up on the C is not on the ZX. The ZXs, especially earlier models were famous (infamous) for lack of grunt and needing their necks wrung a bit to make HP. Newer models have been retuned to get more low-end torque by way of faster opening secondary throttles, but putting a motor tuned like a ZX-14 into a heavy bike like a C-14 and adding all the weight it's designed to carry would be a dissapointment. More displacement (1500cc) makes for more grunt and less stress doing the same mission. What's wrong with that?
