I recently completed a 7,000k trip over 3 weeks doing some of the best roads in OZ and the GTR performed brilliantly two up and pretty well fully loaded. When I got home I cleaned it and put it in the shed for 3 weeks and went to start it and no compression except for one cylinder. It wouldn't start obviously. So a call to the dealer saw it picked up and it took them 2 days to get it to run. They said when it did start on the one cylinder the engine rattled very badly so they shut it down. Which leads me to think there is an oil pressure problem as well. After 4 days I picked it up. Thing is the dealer wouldn't treat it as a warranty claim until there was some pretty assertive talk from me to them. These guys will try anything!!! In the end I spoke to the mechanic and he seemed to think it could be a pending problem and he had not come across this with the GTR or the ZX14. He said the valves had all stuck open. He had experienced this once before in another bike though and that was from washing the bike and not letting the engine run to dry it out. Didn't think much of that explanation. Anyway it is running great now but it is a real worry. I'll be starting it weekly as I don't use it all that much and I have lost my licence anyway. Anybody else heard of this????

wow, that's a bit serious, after a wash!!?? I half agree with the "run it dry aftre.." theory, but more for brakes, suspension, switchgear... never heard of a motor being affected, unless it was subjected to high-psi hosing which is a risk for damage.
Soft-hose and bucket has washed and never had a related failure issues for my previous 23 bikes...
Just got back from a 600 klm run on the east coast of Tassy , came home, washed the bike as usual , started it and run it while i dryed it off , do this every time , never had that problem before . allways let motor cool down before washing , wouldnt be an oil issue would it , i use Castrol GPS, semi synthetic ! cheers mark ..
No the oil is semi synthetic Motorex and has done about 7,000k. Due for a change I know but only done highway miles. I just can't relate to the washing theory though. Same as you Pete never had the problem with any of the bikes I have owned previously either. You would get bugger all water on the engine anyway with the fairing! BTW Holma I got to Tassie but we had so much on I just didn't get around to catching up. Pete I only got 5,000 k out of the original crap tyres before the front was completely bald on the right hand side. Put new Pilot Power 2's on in Melbourne (on the way down from Brissie)and they are sensational.
just a general question, Pete you mention the brakes, how many miles/km did you guys ride before changing the brake pad's (front/rear) on the gtr??

I don't think I'm buying this valve story. If the valves were open then they would be struck by the pistons once the engine was turned over. Maybe there was some carbon or something on the seats preventing a good seal. Just seems like a very odd story to me. Good to hear all is back to normal.
