Video camera

A general question. Have any of you any experience in using and mounting a video camera to your bike? I am quite keen on the idea so that we can capture some of our trips.

Are there any particular features that are “must have” when used for this type of application e.g. “anti-shake”?

I have done this a few times, but have yet to mount the camera on the GTR, image stabilisation is a must and my very old GRDV3 JVC copes very well, I have also used the pillion autocom feed to link to the 'mic in' on the camera so I can talk into my end and what would normally be heard by the wife, goes straight to the camera, works OK but its hard to set the levels correctly.
The current challenge is design of the bracket to fit the GTR and give the desired view,
I am sure you will be amazed at the quality which can be achieved, happy to share some results if you fancy seeing them. Be warned they are very large files! would have to be a DVD

Thanks for this info, I'll be delighted to share some stuff; not likely to be before summer though. Rest assured that, as soon as I am able (new job needed!) I shall order the bike and then start the count-down to the delivery date.

It's usually better to mount the camera on your helmet where it will be more stable. A bit like an Army main battle tank gun stability system. Bike mounting will make video prone to the odd shake, rattle and roll as the bike hits obstacles and during braking etc.

I am going to have a go with this unit. All that is needed is a decent fast 2Gig chip and its good for 2hours of high res video. Plus it's waterproof. You get a helmet mount and also a bike mount but it is so light that you could velcro it or strap it to the fairing or ram scoop vents etc.
You can get them for about £80.00 if you hunt around. And that is cheap enough to experiment with without stuffing your precious £500 camcorder.

OK Chris; what's made your mind up. I seems ridiculously cheap ("you get what you pay for", springs to mind). Have you seen any example video clips ?

This is a Canon SD500, taped to my tank bag. Vid turned out great, but it was huge and my buddy had to down size it for you tube.

Mounted on the bike it doesn't show too much bumping etc. I have tried a bunch of different mounting styles and they are fine as long as the road isn't too rough. I can't see a helmet cam being too smooth with all the moving around you would be doing.

True John, you do get what you pay for. There are some samples here but they are down sized for web use so the quality is not brilliant but good enough.

The next step would be the Delux kit which is far better quality but cost £300.

Hi JIS, and anyone else interested in bike camera systems.

I have just purchased a DSR-100 from Motocomm. The system comprises all mount options and cabling for a complete on-bike set-up. The added advantage for me is that the connectors used are all mini DIN which are compatible with my Starcom1 comms system. It means I can instal a totally integrated comms and camera system utilising the helmet mic to feed sound to the recorded film soundtrack.

I bought the device on ebay. just type in DSR-100 and you will be directed. (Hopefully they haven't sold out or find it elsewhere on the internet by entering DSR-100 in to a search engine.

I completely agree. Main model, which interests me, is model whick Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman have on their helmets on two double epic DVD's, "Long Way Round" and "Long Way Down". Shoot material on the DVD is perfect quality, and is made by helmet cameras. This models are simply (and for sure) not the cheapest, but it's worth it!

But I still don't know which models are these cameras, who produced it? On their official website - one tipical "almost unusefull flash site" - there info about almost everything, but not for anything usefull...

So, has anybody details about sistem they used on Long Way trips? Which camera unit, which recorder, which sistem (wired or wireless)??
