I'm about to lose it...

So I bought this ZX7R with a salvage title the other day. I go to get my tag and and they say I need an inspection...ok. Unfortunately, it's a 8-12 week waiting period for them to come to you (cuz I can't drive it, even though it's been less than 30 days since I bought it and it's insured). What's more, here in GA they don't believe distributing their inspection sites, except in ATL. The bike is perfectly fine, it has a cracked fairing. So, come saturday I'm driving for 2 hours 1 way to get the bike inspected. Anyone know what I need to be prepared for the inspection? I just want to meet the retard that said this bike was salvage...

Ok, I'm done ranting.

Without seeing it in person, I can tell you a salvage title is what happens when an insurance company pays the owner for total-loss damage and then re-sells the bike to a junkyard or back to the owner. You should pull the fairing and inspect the frame for damage on the side where the fairing's cracked. It's possible that whatever caused it to be a total has been repaired or replaced. It's also possible there are hidden issues that would prevent the DMV from passing it through inspection.

You should have come here first and searched the salvage title issue. It can be a pain to get it registered. I hope you saw it on the title or they told you it was salvage. The bike was in an accident and either had more repairs than it was worth or it might have a cracked or bent frame.
Good luck with finding the retard.

Make sure the frame and swingarm don't have any dents in them. Make sure the headlights, brake lights, turn signals, mirrors, speedo, etc. are all in good working order. And if anything on it is aftermarket, make sure it meets the states regulations. I'm sure there is a checklist on the inspection/highway patrol website that you could look up.

Thanx for the advice, I'll check under the fairing. But I doubt I'll find anything, it was laid over at a really low speed I think.

I would wonder why the bike has a salvage title in the first place. You could have everything looking good and working but if they pull up the VIN and find out it had a bent frame, they won't pass it unless you get documentation that the frame was put back to original specs.

for what everyone else has already said. Also make sure the bike has everything you would find on a stock bike: tag lights, turn signals, mirrors, proper tag placement, the whole 9 yards. Also make sure the exhaust doesn't exceed noise regulations. If you want there is another forum I am on sometimes called georgiasportbike.com on there somewhere a couple of weeks back I found a thread about one of the members who bought a Ducati Monster salvaged and he had the same pain in the ass issues you are having. You may want to go on there and see what all he had to do. As a fellow GA resident I will be the first to agree that the GA DMV and DOT suck the big one. Hopefully everything goes smoothly for you. Don't know what I would do if I had a new to me bike sitting in my garage and I couldn't ride it.

Tag light...um, oops. That might be an issue. Refer to my plate mounts thread for the deets, but my tag light on my integrated tail light will not do much for my swingarm mounted tag. Perhaps I'll leave the swingarm mount off and let them infer that I'll somehow mount the tag right under the tail light...

Again, thanx for all your advice guys.

I would deff remount the tag. Not ture if swingarm mounts are legal in GA. Also I am using led tag bolts. they put a ton of light on the tag. Just a suggestion.

Like I said in my other thread, I bought the bike without the original tag mount/blinker assy. Sooo, might have to get creative. I'm thinking about sticking some home depot L-brackets on there where the old mount went, just for inspection so it can be inferred I'll "properly" mount my tag. LED tag bolts, hmmm, sounds interesting...

I highly recommend them. I have a pair on my bike and they put a lot of light out. $20 on eBay. I was skeptical about their ability to endure the elements and figured I'd have to pull them and rewire the factory one, but so far so good. Several months with not an issue.

, don't remember where I got mine. I dont think it was ebay though. They put off a ton of light. If you are trying to figure out your tag still you may want to look into speedtactics. I have their fender eliminator kit on my akrapovic slip on but they have a universal aftermarket exhaust fender eliminator or a stock exhaust fender eliminator and it was a fairly good price. Just thought I would pass it along. They shipped quick and I have been happy with it so far.

So I got my bike loaded up and drove it to ATL. Went into the place (hole in the wall) and the guy said not to unload it, he could look it over. The other inspector on the phone said he was a newb and was still being trained kinda. Well, I had repeatedly made sure it was ok that I had done nothing to it and my left fairing was still broken. Anyway, he walked out and immediately said the broken fairing wasn't going to fly. Well, I'd driven two hours and started to lose it. Fortunately, my older and much wiser father (who used to deal with these jokers all the time, he rebuilt cars) jumped in and started kissing some butt. He suggested the inspector do the rest and we send a picture of my new fairing (which was sitting at the house, just needs to be painted) and then he fax the signed inspection form over. Well, he agreed and we went and grabbed some lunch while he did some paperwork. By the time we got back, he was thinking a little clearer and just asked us to be honest and actually change the fairing and he signed off on everything and sent us on our way. Turned out to be not so painful, Im just glad I had a level headed person with me. Few things really get my temper going but people letting me drive great distances and then changing details is one of them (it's the 3rd time in 6th months I've encountered situations like this, wow). But a good day in the end! Thanx for your suggestions, he just made sure lights and horn worked and the frame was in one piece.
