runaway yotas
so just wondering everyones thoughts on this runaway lexus and toyota stuff. granted there may or may not be a prob with the electronic throttle control, thats why ive never trusted them, but how retarded do you hafta be to not fiigure out when your car starts running away to put it in neutral and then your brakes will work, or even throw it into park and fuck it all up but at least youd be alive and not in a wreck.
the whole situation reminds me of this txt my wife got a few weeks ago of this guy and girl riding on a bike and the brakes go out. but the guy driving doesnt want the girl to kno so he tells her he loves her and tells her to hug him and then he somehow takes his helmet off and gives it to her (why didnt she already have a helmet?? =bs story) and then they end up wrecking he dies she lives. i tried telling my wife that was total bs because any one in their right mind on two wheels that lost their brakes would just downshift to a stall on the side of the road instead of still goin, of course she didnt want to believe that the love story wasnt true but w/e.
ne how theres my thoughts now for yours

You know how women are, they love romance! haha. Of course we know it's B.S., just let her enjoy the hopeless little fictional story.

I have read that story before. There are enough option on a bike that you can avoid running into a wall at full speed. Like you said downshift, they have kill switches for a reason, or even lay it down but dont just run it into a wall.
I have to agree with the OP on this

My Mom used to have a Mazda that did that to her once. Some seal in the throttle body came loose or fell into it causing it to go WOT. She threw it into Neutral immediately, stopped on the side of the road and killed the engine. Turns out it was a pretty popular problem with that model year.
Haven't heard anything recently about Toyotas doing it. But yeah, any moron should know to shift into Neutral, brake to a slower speed, kill the engine or something.

Gotta say, I find this rather amusing.

Thats a good point man, always have to remember those idiots.
And that is a damn good quote from your dad. Will have to use that again sometime.

There was a recall on the 929's shortly after that happened. It's probably been 14 years since then...

yea it was on the news the other night for about 20 mins, apparently four ppl in one lexus lost their lives and one of them was an off duty highway patrolman. its sad to know that they lost their lives due to panick and bad engineering. if they werent panicking as much he would have heard the operator asking him to turn the car off, here is the sound clip i found http://consumerist.com/5376667/toyot...k-on-floormats

That's sad to hear. I think people forget that even though they become "manual" brakes and "manual" steering with the engine off, they still perform their functions.

No offense to the occifers of the law on here, but you would think a CHP trooper would know what to do. Doesn't help my opinion of CHP IQ levels to hear that he somehow couldn't get a car to stop AND had time to dial 911 for help.
Personally I think the driver rode the brakes until they faded to high hell, then they were really SOL. Also heard they couldn't shut off the car cuz they didn't know how to shut off a fancy push button start thingamajibi. Too much car and not enough smarts.
Anyhow, that's what I heard and it's prolly all bs, so the views and opinions expressed here do not necessarily reflect those of the owners of this station or it's broadcasters.

yea im willing to bet they faded the shit outta those brakes, but if a dead engine, neutral, or even park occured first then all would have ended well. yea even tho it is kinda dick doesnt say much for CHP

from what i've read on other forums this is exactly whats happening. throttle gets stuck, people slam on the brakes and the engine overcomes them when the brakes fade quickly.
although we're able to say stupid people can't drive etc etc - imagine you're taking a highway onramp getting up to ~70mph and start slowing down for traffic which is suddenly stopping a mile or so ahead. suddenly your throttle goes WOT, brakes fade, and you lose stopping power while your car is stuck accelerating. sure there are actions you can take to stop the car, but for a typical person in a panicked state they always don't remember the rational choices. so what's obvious to most keyboard cowboys won't be for the anxious and panicked driver.
people not finding neutral or whatever is ridiculous though. too many automatics and people only knowing how to put it in "D" or "P" and go from point A to point B though.

That's why I don't like automatics. If you can't drive a standard, you shouldn't be allowed to drive. Too many ppl who know even less than the very basics causing way too many accidents.
Imagine being on your bike with THAT idiot barreling down on you as you come to a stop behind traffic. Scary ass poo

With the CHP and the Lexus story I actually suspect foul play. Why would you call 911 in the middle of an emergency like that? Why wouldn't he know what to do? It could actually be a murder, suicide deal and the 911 call is a cover. It all just seems a little off to me.
It reminds me of an incident in Detroit many years ago where a family, Mom, Dad and three kids ended up in lake Michigan. The parents got out but all the kids died. I wondered what sort of man doesn't die trying to rescue his kids and was therefore suspicious. Soon after a witness showed up who said they had taken three runs at the lake. They were charged with murder.
