What: Rio Grande River Motorcycle Jump
When: 10:30 A.M. This Saturday, June 27
Where: Across from the brown ASARCO smokestack on Paisano
About ½ mile south of Executive. Directions next page.
Why: The jump is part of the International Drug Awareness Day and the Rally on the River being celebrated by Mexico near the jump site. We are trying to get some good news about our two countries out to the national media.
El Paso’s Eddie Wearden will attempt to get into the Guinness Book of World Records by jumping from one country to another, one day short of his 50th birthday. Eddie is a local businessman concerned that all America sees on the news about El Paso and Juarez is negative.
Mexico is having a large party this Saturday very close to the jump site. The mayors of Las Cruces, Sunland Park, and Juarez will be there. Children with good grades will be receiving helicopter rides, there will be bands and food, all on the Mexican side.
Eddie will be at the jump site by 9 AM for interviews. After the jump at 10:30, the US side is making him ride his bike all the way to the downtown bridge to cross back, so he won’t be back to the jump site for post-jump interviews for 30 to 40 minutes (Mexico is giving him an escort, and the authorities at the bridge said he can cut the line).
