The trick I use is to use Allen headed sockets and a long bar. Hold the socket absolutely square and seated and fractionally tighten the bolt. You can hear a faint "tink" as it cracks. Then carefully undo. The long bar allows you gently apply pressure and to feel if you're going to strip the hex socket.
