I think it comes in to play if you hit the clutch downward by accident, not causing too much force, NjNinja stated that he "down shifted violently", I'm not sure if it was supposed to shift, but I'm sure if enough pressure or force was applied to the shift lever, it would shift w/o clutching. I'm no mechanic and have no clue of the mechanics of a clutch and shifter, but just from riding and driving manual, it seems to me that the clutch just makes it easier to change gears and not fuck up the gear plates (is this an actual part? ) and transmission.
