The answer to your question would vary from person to person.
Don't move up until you are comfortable in all aspects with riding your 250. That could be a year or two. You may even want to consider looking at sport-touring bikes in the 500cc - 650cc range for your next bike instead of going to the 6R? You could sell the ZX-6R and buy something else instead. Up to you and your comfort level with riding a SS bike later on. Also; you need to consider what kind of riding you want to do most. That's a big factor too.

Oh, and by the way - maybe consider getting a new BF. His initial advise to you was not very well thought out (imo).
