a stand is not necessary, but makes it easier. Socket wrench is a must if u don't want to wrestle with a screwdriver stabbed thru the middle of the filter. Go to a dealer and get some good synthetic oil; I did my zx6r some time ago with synth for cars and it foamed, so get bike oil. Apart from that, it should be a fairly easy DIY, the washer is pretty solid and good enough for a some changes; dealers around here charge 60$ for regular oil change, synth can go above a 100$, if u get the oil and filter it's around 30-40 bucks depending what u get.
