You are doing the right thing in taking it apart. Dont knock a jet kit yet, when INSTALLED PROPERLY! I have a dynojet kit and get 48.8 MPG (Memorial Day weekend) and runs awesome! The guy that installed it on your bike did not set something up correct. I dont know the oem setting but I would find out who and what about the kit and settings installed in your bike. Then check that info with the settings on the carbs now and go from there.
