Performance mods

I haven't posted here in a while but I thought for those interested I would share my performance data after installing an Area P dual setup for a zx14.

The baseline run for my stock form bike back in December was:

I was a bit dissapointed. Most of the stock ZG1400 I've seen will dyno in the 133 to 136 hp range so I suppose I got a weak one. No matter...at that time (December) I installed a Two Borthers Ti can and a PC3 and got some nice gains. But after seeing the Muzzy Dual I fell in love with the "twins".

However I was determined NOT to blow $1500 on an exhaust system. In short I wound up getting an OEM zx14 header off Ebay for $50. Then a used Dual slip Area P for a ZX14 for $255. This sytem is "catless" so it should perform similarly to the Muzzy full dual system. I had to make a few mods to get it to fit but it turned out nice I thought and it cost a total of $530:

After installing the Duals I tuned it and rode the beast about 5000 miles. I loved the look. I loved the low rpm LOW down rumble. But I got tired of the "race bike" howl of this exhaust when I pinned the throttle. I'm 48 and have two grandchildren...I'm just getting too old for that sh!t.

So I recalled a fine exhaust maker in Oz - Staintune. A buddy of mine had one on his ZZR1200. They have these slick little devices called "restrictors" that cut noise level radically but do not affect performance significantly. I made some measurements and determined they wold fit the AreaP perfectly. Here's what they look like installed:

They reduced the AreaP outlet diameter from 2.25 inches (54 mm) down to 1.4 inches (about 36 mm). WOW was that effective. The bike is now almost as quiet as the stock exhaust. It's still has a low rumble in the lower revs but greatly subdued. And now when I spur it it doesn't bellow so obnoxiously.

After installing the inserts I took the "Bulitt" into TCS and had Scott re-tune it to compensate for the restrictors. The final result was satisfying at the very least. This is the final dyno run. The bike in this run has these mods:

No cats
No flies
ZX14 OEM header with AreaP duals
PC3
BMC airfilter

My butt dyno agrees. The thing has undergone a complete transformation. I realize these mods aren't for everyone. But for those that gravitate to power...hope I've helped you in your quest.

MOO!
