It sounds as though every light has a separate ground. So you have to make sure your grounds are connected first.
Then as stated, connect one at a time to see if they work while holding them together. You shouldn't short out anything. Sometimes electrical wiring for lighting can be a PITA... but in the end, you'll find one little thing that you didn't do that caused all the problems. Good luck, and I hope they get back to you soon.
