Once you are sure that everything works like it is supposed to... try going through and hooking up one thing at a time to make sure your not hooking something up backwards or mismatched.
If you can be sure that there is voltage coming to the wire your splicing from the proper source and you know that the light works like it should, then putting the two things together should only yield an obvious result.
