Stock exhaust - why big and heavy

There have been many posts on replacement exhausts. I have tried a Two Bros and am back with the standard as I find silence is golden.
What bothers me is the shear size (length) and colossal weight of the stock can. Is there anyone out there that has inside info as to why KAWA chose to make the can so long and heavy. Some of the theories are:
Needs to be that size/weight to get decibels down.
Needs to be long so fumes are not pulled up to rider.
Needs to be long to avoid sound bouncing off panniers
etc etc.
Anyone know the real reason why KAWA produced the most talked about can on modern bikes ?
