Have you got a fuse adjacent to the solenoid, if so check the condition &/or connections of that, this is often overlooked. The 500 has this additional fuse so the 7R probably has too. Also check the starter button on the handlebar control. Both of these if exposed to the elements can corrode & cause bad connections.
