Not to discourage your ingenuity, but I think you would be better off purchasing a purpose-crafted item. I doubt the monetary savings would justify doing it yourself, when it comes to your safety. The gear that I've seen isn't too expensive and has padding as well as the kevlar treatments. My 2 cents.
